The Ghosts of Christmas past, present and future would, of course, opt for the spooky Beyond Bizarre tour.

Can't decide? No problem! Buy an "any-tour" gift and let your happy recipient apply your selected value to the tour of their choosing.

It's Easy!

Here's the best part:  you can shop from the comfort of your own easy chair. Filling stockings with a gift certificate from Portland Walking Tours is fast and easy! Last minute gifts are a snap.

Featured Vendor:  Benessere
Savor the Flavors

If you have Italian cold pressed olive oil on your pantry shelves - you know, the good stuff - you might not want to read this.

It’s December, which means that Italian oil was pressed about a year ago. Olive oil’s health benefits disappear within nine months of pressing, to say nothing of its superior aromas and flavors.

Besides, Benessere, a locally-owned and independent oil and vinegar tasting room in downtown and Northeast Portland, has something to show you.

BenessereBenessere’s traditional olive oils “are the freshest on the market,” says Heather Wade, the shop’s founder. “We have them chemically analyzed before delivery to make sure they’re pure and fresh.”

With over fifty different products to taste, including a variety of Balsamic vinegars (aged at least fourteen years) to pair with the flavored and unflavored oils, Benessere is a great place to let your taste buds get lost for a while. (Try the fresh walnut oil with cinnamon pear Balsamic. Yum!)

Tastings are free - dangerously so, as shoppers soon discover once they start filling bottles from the shiny silver bins positioned around the store.

“I heard about the idea on a TV sitcom,” Heather says, “and started doing some research. Six months later (June, 2010), we opened downtown. I just knew it was meant to be!”

A shop featuring oil and vinegar may sound crazy - “Keep Portland Weird, after all,” Heather says with a laugh. “But this summer, a person came in to apologize - and congratulate us, admitting they thought at first we didn’t have a snowball’s chance.” Now with a second store on Northeast Broadway, “people look to us as a resource,” she says.

Which is perfect. “We don’t want to just make money off the city - we want to be part of it,” Heather says. Benessere was recycling bottles and using recyclable bags long before it became a City mandate.

Benessere also sells its products, including holiday gift packages, on-line. But to truly experience the Benessere concept, we recommend visiting the store.

Resident Expert Profile:
Alyssa Roehrenbeck

If you show up for a tour and find that your guide is Alyssa Roehrenbeck, don’t panic. You probably won’t experience hail the size of golf balls. After all, what are the odds of that happening twice?

Alyssa has led every tour offered by Portland Walking Tours since she started in 2009 - except the Beyond Bizarre Walking Tour.

“I am totally OK not going into creepy buildings in the dark, looking for things to scare me,” Alyssa says. Quite the comment coming from a person who, to put it mildly, does not scare easily.

An inveterate “foodie,” Alyssa prefers leading the Epicurean Excursion or the Chocolate Decadence Tour. “I find it generally pleasing to feed people. Must be the Italian part of me,” she laughs.

“I love exposing the fun, quirky, and very Portland food scene. There are always new things to be discovered and it makes every tour a tasting adventure.”

alyssa-facebook2 2Plus, she needs her daily chocolate fix. “If my chocolate addiction has not been answered by 3pm, it usually kicks into emergency theobromine need and I have to find the closest chocolate shop in Portland. Luckily that is not so hard.”

Alyssa is active in Portland’s film and theater scene, recently completing an indie feature film called “Mock Trials.” She also loves to hike and camp - it helps her think up “fantastical ideas” - and watch Ohio State football. (Nobody’s perfect.)

Known for her remarkable memory with names (test her on a tour sometime), infectious humor and casual style, Alyssa brings the “fun” to every tour.

“I want to design a tour around Portland’s trifecta of tasty alcohol - beer, wine from the Willamette valley, and tiny distilleries. Teaching people how to pair each with food would be an ideally fun day!”

School Tours: Apply Now
for Spring Grants

Kids love field trips. But not every school can afford them for every classroom.

That's why every spring and fall, Portland Walking Tours selects one classroom of students to go on our acclaimed "Art, History, and Transit Tour" for free in our Community Grant Program.

Yes, FREE.

The tour is designed to help meet Oregon's third-grade Social Sciences Core Standards - but it's not a dry history lesson. Instead, the Art, History and Transit Tour engages kids interactively, making it fun to learn about their community.

To learn more about the Art, History, and Transit Tour and to apply for consideration to receive a Community Grant, visit our School Tours page.
