Great Portland gifts with great taste

November 30th, 2010

Holiday shopping days are upon us, and we all could use a few good ideas for special gifts. Of course you want to give something uniquely Portland, and uniquely you – something memorable, and not in the sense of that “memorable” lime green tie that Uncle Fred regifted to Aunt Betty last year.

Luckily, Portland’s chocolatiers and specialty shops offer tasty options that will thrill your loved ones and not break the bank, while helping you show off some of Portland’s best-kept secrets.

Truffle boxes – Portland’s hometown chocolatier, Moonstruck Chocolates, offers over two dozen different Christmas packages, ranging from a $7.95 “Peppermint Patty”,  to the $75.95 “Holiday Gift basket”. I find their Egg Nog Snowman most intriguing, but I don’t think I could possibly resist the twenty-plus truffle assortment options.

Swiss assortment – Teuscher’s famously decorated Swiss chocolates are perfect for the holidays. Gift boxes range from $6.50 for the Cocoa Chocolate Bar to the family sized “Old Map Zurich” 42-ounce box complete with a bird’s-eye view map of the old city. Their $9.50 Angel truffle is almost too beautiful to eat.

Belgian chocolates – If Belgian pralines are more to your taste, try Leonidas. Their one pound (yes, a full pound) assortment of white, milk, and dark chocolate pralines is only $36. Their two-pound Holiday Decorative Ballotin will not only delight your palate with its mix of chocolate casings and fillings but it will also brighten your tree with its festive packaging.

Drink your chocolate – Another great Portland chocolatier, Cacao, is famous for their chocolate drinks, and their spicy chocolate drink with espresso is to die for. But drinking chocolate is best served fresh, and doesn’t keep well under the tree, so your best bet is a gift certificate, available in any denomination from either Portland location.

Don’t know where to find these shops? Problem solved. (Warning! Shameless self-promotion alert!) Sign up for our Chocolate Decadence tour and we’ll take you to all of these shops and more, and you can try them all yourself first. In fact, you might find it so hard to choose that you’ll want to give all of these chocolates as a gift. No problem! We sell gift certificates too, right on our web page.

So if you missed the shopping rush of Black Friday – either due to unavoidable conflicts or complete aversion to competing with 923 of your closest friends for dark socks – and don’t know how or why to “Cyber Monday,” don’t worry. You can fill those bright red stockings with carefully chosen, affordable, and thoughtful gifts that everyone will love. Even Uncle Fred and Aunt Betty.
