Portland Holiday Festivities begin this week

November 25th, 2013

Holiday festivities begin this weekend with a couple of great Portland traditions.

First, Nov. 27, the day before Thanksgiving an annual holiday tradition continues with the nightly lighting of the Hanukkah menorah in downtown Portland’s Director Park. Candles will be lit over eight nights in keeping with tradition.

On Friday, Nov. 29 (the day after Thanksgiving, in the heart of the holiday shopping season), we have two great events. First is the Portland Macy’s Day Parade, a perennial post-Thanksgiving jaunt through downtown Portland with Marching bands, oversize inflatables, colorful floats and celebrity appearances to last all winter long. It’s free, doesn’t require reservations, and at just over an hour long, it puts you in perfect position to begin your holiday shopping.

Then, at 5:30 PM, the tree lighting ceremony takes place in Portland’s living room (Pioneer Courthouse Square). Music includes a sing-along led by Pink Martini’s Thomas Lauderdale, the 234th Army band, and the Pacific Youth Choir.

Happy holidays!
