The Veleteria Museum closes January 24th

January 4th, 2010

It’s with a sad and heavy heart that we tell our loyal readers that a Portland institution is closing. The Velveteria – a museum dedicated to velvet paintings – is closing on January 24, 2010. After four years, our friends Caren Anderson and Carl Baldwin are calling it quits. They says it’s because of the current economy, but we heard that things got tough when they moved into a large space 2 years back and rent tripled for them

You still have a few more weeks to visit. If you can’t make it, you can buy their book, “Black Velvet Masterpieces: Highlights From the Collection of the Velveteria Museum,” from Chronicle Books.

Even though the Veleteria is closing, we know the inside scoop on the original 24 Hour Church of Elvis rising again in 2010. “Keep Portland Weird” lives on!
